What an amazing night!
What an amazing night! June is #30DaysWild and for the longest day my challenge was to sleep out in my hammock high in a tree. And I knew just the tree for such a cool micro adventure: there is a beech tree not so far from home, an amazing towering tree, and so into the forest I went with all my kit & gear for a wild Thursday night out.
The climb was ace and rigging the hammock just right at 25m AGL was fun with a bit of tickle stick magic needed to access a big side stem for the far end go the hammock. The trick is to get the hammock set nice and level, putting your comfort stuff (sleep mat, sleep bags and pillow) in without any of it disappearing down out of sight before you climb in! Finally, I hung up my shoes and slid into the sleeping bag and settled down.
There were stars, a lovely moon and a deep blue-black inky sky. Once tucked in and cosy, still wearing my harness of course, I was all ready for snoozing though it was still surprisingly light so I pulled my hat down and zipped up the brilliant DD hammock and slept blissfully till a couple of hours after dawn when I peeked out, grinned, and slept a little more. By the time I arrived back down to earth with all my kit and ropes, there was a wonderful someone waiting there with hot tea and home-made choc covered apricots – happy days!
